This is a huge limitation for anyone who intends to use the plugin as a substitute for a real singer. If you draw a note outside this range, the entire sequence will be highlighted in red and Emvoice One won’t play any audio. Before purchasing the full voice pack for a whopping $200, Lucy can only be used to sing a seven-note range, from H2 to D3. The free version of Emvoice One features a single female voice called Lucy. But the fact is that Emvoice One sounds very convincing to my ears. Take this statement with a grain of salt, though, because I don’t really use vocal synthesis plugins on a daily basis. The generated vocals do sound robotic but the sound quality is on par with the likes of Vocaloid and other popular virtual singers. Once you’re happy with the notes and the lyrics, simply press the play button in your DAW and Emvoice One will start singing. The pen tool is used to draw the notes and the text box below the note is where the lyrics are typed in. The plugin’s front panel features a familiar-looking piano roll with a small selection of input tools, undo/redo buttons, as well as BPM and quantization settings. The Emvoice One virtual instrument is intuitive and easy to use. By inputting notes and the corresponding lyrics in the plugin’s piano roll, the user can simulate the performance of a real-world singer without recording any external audio. The plugin features an advanced vocal synthesis engine that generates realistic human singing in a matter of seconds. Emvoice One lets the user create instant vocals in their DAW application of choice. We’ll discuss the limitations in a moment, but let’s take a closer look at the software’s main features first. The free version of the software is functional although it does come with some limitations. Still, the sound quality makes up for the somewhat high CPU usage. The plugin consumes around 7% of available CPU resources on our Core i7-powered test machine, which is a bit higher than expected for this type of effect. The control scheme is convenient for the most part, although setting the stereo separation amount can be a bit fiddly when the modulation intensity is set to 0% or 100%. However, more extreme settings can sound very good when used on synthesized instruments like pads and strings, or if you’re looking to create intentionally artificial sounding vocals. The doubling effect sounds convincing and natural with just the right amount of pitch drifting when the modulation amount is set to around 50%. While testing Vocal Doubler, my impression was that moderate amounts of stereo separation and modulation worked the best for doubling lead vocals. The only other available controls are the mix knob, the solo button (which mutes the dry signal altogether), and the bypass switch for turning the effect on or off. The numerical value of both parameters is shown in the lower-left corner. The XY pad in the center of the interface controls both the amount of stereo separation and the modulation intensity of the doubled signal. Vocal Doubler sports a modern-looking user interface with a simple control scheme.
